Privacy and You

There was a moment in another class when I realized that students are interested in the news and particularly, news around social media companies (Shout out to Patricia Smith for knowing about Cambridge Analytica). So I dug up some good articles on the subject so we can all be more informed citizens. Please read the following and answer the questions in the Google Form. Then write a 1-2 paragraph reflection on the topic of privacy in the Comment section of this post. Is it important to you or are you ok with companies using your data without your permission?

1) Read these two articles:

  1. I think that the right to privacy, even though it's not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution, is a universal right, as privacy helps keep property safe, and it is stated in the Constitution that we have a right to property, so therefore, in extent, we are entitled to privacy, which is why what Facebook is doing is wrong and corrupt,as they are able to profit off the sales of their users' data.

  2. I think privacy is extremely important because it is what keeps us safe. Everyone is entitled to having their personal lives secret. Not on display for whoever wants to find it. Because privacy is not guaranteed, I try my best to not keep anything personal online.

  3. I think that privacy is important to an individual. Without privacy people tend to feel unsafe and would you blame them? Once someones privacy is exposed especially on the internet it will never be erased.Privacy is an individual right that should not be out in the open to the whole world to see. It is a shame when the person who signed a privacy polices companies/website those are the ones that exposed them.

  4. In my opinion, privacy is extremely important in everybody's every day lives. Privacy helps people feel more secure in this unfortunately being damaged world. Knowing that our information is private helps us feel more confident and safe from problems. Without privacy everyone would know a lot about each other, but in a horrible way. Knowing too much about each other can cause world problems such as war, more killings, and more bullying.

  7. i think privacy is a right that everyone should have, privacy makes everyone feel safe. With privacy we can keep things hidden that we don't want the whole world to know, like our address or phone number. keeping these things private makes us feel safe and keeps us safe.
