Adolescence and Technology

We discussed in class the importance of non-verbal cues and looked at the impact adolescence has on learning development (see below). We also talked about how technology can negatively impact social development because our focus is  removed from everything else.

So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one element of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. Then go online and find an article that supports or negates your position and give us a brief summary of what the article states.

For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying. The article I found talks about how 75% of students using cell phones in class are performing worse than those without. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/04/do-smartphones-have-a-place-in-the-classroom/480231/

  1. I am for using your phone in school because in case of an emergency what would you do? The website https://www.seeker.com/cellphones-are-changing-school-emergency-plans-1766312503.html helps state my opinion. The article is about how since there have been many school shootings recently kids should be able to use their phones in class. Obviously there would be many problems of student using their phones in class but at least the school would show people that they just want their students safe.

    1. Excellent Elisabella. Student safety is a priority for schools and should factor into the decision of whether to allow students access to devices or not.

  2. i am for using your phones in school to a ceritn point, we con contact our parents if we have practice after school so they know we will not be home right after school, and if something happens in school you should be able to contact your moms, dads, or grandparents. also we are living in a day and age where we are advancing so we should use tech for school. https://www.writeabout.com/.../should-studentsbe-allowed-to-use-cell-phones-in-school/

    1. Good Danielle. Your source didn't use any facts to support their argument. Research a little more and use facts to support your arguments. And of course cite the source.

  3. I think we should be able to use or phones during school to an extent. Yes, they can be distracting during class and there is the chance students might cheat. But there is no reason why we can't use them in the hallway. The big reason we should be able to use our phones is for safety. The website https://www.useoftechnology.com/cell-phones-allowed-in-school/ supports my opinion. This article supports my opinion among others listing the pros of having phones in class. I believe that, in an emergency, we should be able to use our phones in school.

  4. I think we should be able to use our phones during school hours. However I think our phones should be monitored by the school. We could do that by making us download some sort of app that the would make all the teachers able to see what we are doing on our phones. The only reason a student should have there phone is should only be for safety reasons. I do not think it would be as distracting as others may think but it would show disrespect to the teachers if we do use our phones during class. The article in this website supports my thought https://www.debate.org/opinions/should-cell-phones-be-allowed-to-be-carried-within-schools-but-forbidden-from-use-except-for-emergencies.

  5. I think it is necessary for students to keep their phones on them because unfortunately, and especially in this particular country, we need to alert family members if there is an emergency occurring at school. I don't think that phones should be allowed to be used during classes, but definitely during breaks as a mental break from the stress of school. I also think that phones can be used to aid school projects, such as taking pictures/screenshots of important notes that can be used later, but I don't think that they should be taken out in class because kids will likely surf the internet instead of actually working. Furthermore, in America, school shootings are rampant, and it is important for students to alert their families and friends in the worst case that something may happen to them. Phones can also be used to tell family about changes in school schedules and when they will be home, which can reduce the stress that parents/guardians can get from worrying about their child. Here is the source that I read that can support my argument: https://www.publicschoolreview.com/blog/cell-phones-in-class-many-schools-are-saying-yes.
